Design
The conceptual framework underpinning this project was articulated some thirty years ago. It has evolved significantly since its genesis, but still resides within the parameters of the original design criteria.
Those criteria include:
Those criteria include:
- Polyculture, or at least oligulture, rather than monoculture
- Deep rooted perennial species rather than annual
- Low energy input
- Low fertilizer input
- Efficient water management
- Minimal nutrient removal
- Maximum biodiversity values
- Native species favoured over exotics
- Minimise fire risk
- Relatively small plot sizes (to accommodate soil characteristics and to minimise monocultures).
- Siting of water storage and ponds in fire zone,
- Fencing following contour and drainage lines.
- Regeneration areas placed within and adjacent to riparian zones.
- Attempts to link pockets of remnant vegetation.
- Strategic use of grazing to minimise fuel load and weed problems
- Comprehensive use of firebreaks/vehicle access.
